Interior Shutter Myths: The Truth
The Riverside shutter pros have debunked some shutter myths before. On our last myth-debunking spree, we tackled some of the most common misconceptions people have about plantation shutters in Riverside.
Well, the Sunburst Shutters Riverside pros are back to correct the record on a few more myths we’ve heard from shutter-buyers around California. Let’s take a look.
Myth #1: “Plantation Shutters Only Work In Southern Homes.”
When some people hear the phrase “plantation shutters,” their minds stick to the image of a huge, sprawling southern house surrounded by hills. Although it’s true that the shutters owe their name to that location and time, plantation shutters were seen commonly in homes much earlier and much later than 19th Century Southern America.

Nevertheless, plantation shutters offer those very same features to any style of home. Craftsman houses can use shutters, just as Victorian homes, Mid-Century Modern houses, and even beach houses can.
Myth#2: “My Home Style Won’t Work With Shutters Is Too Distinct For Shutters.”
Because plantation shutters have enjoyed widespread use over several decades, some homeowners might think that shutters may seem somewhat boring. We’ve worked with a customer previously who claimed that their house was “too eclectic” for shutters, which was a tad confusing–since shutters are likely the one and only window treatment that can accentuate any style.

Myth #3: “Blinds And Shutters Are Basically The Same Thing.”
For some reason, there’s some confusion over the difference between shutters and blinds. Perhaps it has to do with homeowners conflating “slats” and “louvers,” or perhaps the similar basic shape causes it. Regardless, shutters and blinds couldn’t be more different. Here’s the basic breakdown of both.
What’s the difference? | Blinds | Shutters |
Are able to block out whole window134 | No | Yes |
Structure | Hangs from cord | Solid frame attached to window frame |
Lifetime | Can wear down or deteriorate after 2-3 years. | Can easily last 20+ years. |
Permanent or temporary? | Temporary | Permanent |
Adds to value of the home? | No | Yes |
Energy Efficiency | Minimal | Can block up to 50% of heat from the sun. |
Specialty Windows | No | Can fit any specialty shape windows. |
What are the horizontal parts called? | Slats | Louvers |
Myth #4: “All window coverings are basically the same in energy efficiency.”
Like the “Blinds vs. Shutters” table illustrated, window treatments can vary tremendously on how much energy efficiency they offer. The shape, material, and construction will all play a huge part in how energy efficient a window treatment is.
Offering no benefits in energy efficiency is a bare window without a covering. Offering just a tad more energy efficiency are your everyday off the shelf mini blinds. Up a little further on the spectrum are drapes and sturdy fabric window treatments. Getting into somewhat noticeable territory we have most wood shutters and cellular shades, made to offer UV protection and heat reduction. But dwarfing all of these other window treatments are Polywood plantation shutters, constructed to both reflect and block heat from the sun from moving through your window.
