How To Help Black Out your Riverside Windows

April 02, 2018

There are several reasons you might want to control the light coming from your windows in Riverside. Whether it’s from ambient street light, constant traffic going by, or ordinary sunlight, controlling the light coming from your windows is necessary for a good night’s sleep.

For those in dire need of better sleep, Sunburst is here to help Riverside homeowners block light through their windows.

Which Window Treatments Control Light The Best?

Lots of Riverside window treatments claim to darken a room for better sleep, and you can pretty easily divide them into three categories: the good, the bad, and the ugly. Here’s what you need to know.

Blackout Window Treatments – The Good

The best window treatments to black out your windows should do a few things:

  • Effectively prevent light from coming in.

  • Operate easily based on your preferences.

  • Look stylish.

The window treatment that hits all these marks is Riverside plantation shutters. When the louvers are completely shut, shutters create an almost complete seal on your windows, blocking almost all the light. Our patented Polywood shutters even have built-in weatherstripping that covers the gaps along your window frame, making them even more effective. And unlike cheaper shutters, Polywood is guaranteed to split or crack, which can cause gaps that let light in.

And unlike some chintzy DIY blackout solutions, shutters look beautiful in your home. Rather than looking like a piece of hardware, they’re as fashionable as they are functional.

A second option belonging to the “good” category is room-darkening cellular shades. These are made with thick and dense material to keep out most light, and extend to the edges of your window opening. There can be some slight gaps around the edges of the shade where light might seep inside. But for something other than shutters, room darkening shades make the cut.

Blackout Window Treatments – The Bad

In this category are window coverings that don’t quite cut it when it comes to blacking out a window. Any fabric window treatment, from drapes to curtains, can let some light in if they aren’t both very thick and extend beyond the perimeter of your window.

Even heavy-duty blinds don’t do quite so well, because the slats on blinds are always going to let slivers of light in. That means you’re going to get light, even if it’s at a very slight angle.

Blackout Window Treatments – The Ugly

Search for “Riverside window blackouts” online and you’ll probably find some DIY sheets that you hang in your window to block light. Most of them are customizable to your window size and shape, and adhere to the window frame with velcro or another adhesive. And for the most part, they do what they’re supposed to do.

But the issues with those products are twofold. First off, they don’t exactly look good. Many of these products give up looks for function. So if you get a few of these blackout sheets, make sure to do it in a place that you don’t mind looking unstylish.

Second, for being easy to do it yourself, cross your fingers that you don’t have to remove and put them back up much. The adhesive or velcro that attach them to the wall can wear off pretty easily, which means you have to head back to the store for another one.
